Well it was a bit of a mixed bag weekend for me at Ipswich… the weekend started off well, however it didn’t quite finish as I would have hoped!
Saturday’s qualifying I put the #36 Lodge Bros GT3 Cup Car on pole position ahead of the 40-lap race 1, so I was feeling really confident. The team gave me a lot of assurance heading into the endurance race, with a solid and fast car so I had no doubts the car was faultless. I was comfortable with our strategy and knew the tyre degradation was high at Queensland Raceway, so knew I had to be quite conservative. I made it hard for myself though when I didn’t get a great start, however I managed to fight through, back to pole position and thankfully take the win!
Race 2 then went back to the usual 12-lap race, so the crew had to change the set up of the car and I also had to change my approach and be more aggressive. In shorter races, tyre pressures also start higher and it was important I went hard at the start to ensure I was up the front of the pack early on. I didn’t get off the line quite as well as I had hoped and was pushed back into second place – which is ultimately where I finished up.
Unfortunately in race 3, I finished with a DNF, it was a very unfortunate way to end the weekend and it also hurt my standings in the Championship too. I attempted to pass Fallon on lap two and I unluckily went up the back of him, tagging his exhaust pipe; which split my radiator and ended our race.
I’m now only 18-points ahead in the Championship, which has certainly put a lot more pressure on me – so my focus now will be to collect the maximum points I can.
Winton is up next in 4 weeks time so it’ll be my aim to get that buffer back in points as there are only two races left of the season!
Hope to catch you for at Winton Raceway for Round 5 of the Michelin Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, August 31 – September 2!
