I am absolutely wrapped with my weekend at Phillip Island for round four of the Shannons Nationals’ Michelin Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia. I managed to maintain my lead in the Championship points and am now 47 – points in the overall standings and 60 – points in front of Fallon in the Pro standings.
Friday saw two practice sessions where I finished up 2nd and 1st. Going into Saturday’s qualifying session, I was eager to continue with this performance. I managed to qualify in pole position for Race 1. After getting a good race start, I lead into the opening corner, but was not able to pull away from Max (Vidau). We had a great battle until Max went off giving me full reins of front position where I managed to claim P1 by 10 – seconds. It was a great start to the weekend, the team gave me a great car – I just had to drive it straight to come away with the win!
It was great to be able to keep up the pace heading into Race 2, where I managed to cross the line in pole position on Sunday. Unfortunately, there were a few laps behind the safety car, but I was pleased I was able to hold position when we were given the green.
Sunday’s Race 3 gave a little more action as Simon (Fallon) and I had an awesome battle for the first 6 laps – where I was pushing Fallon for first position. It was great to grab the lead on lap 7, but I knew it wasn’t going to be easy and that Vidau and Fallon would be fast, as they have had a few test days at Phillip Island. Although, it does make it a little more satisfying to come away with a win and of course a clean sweep for the weekend.
It’s great to have a gap in the points in case something does go wrong, but we’re not even half way through the season and there’s a lot of racing remaining.
Next stop, Queensland Raceway 27 – 29 July.
